Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Report of an architectural and topographical survey of the ruined parish church and graveyard that stands at the south-western corner of the site of the deserted medieval borough of Newtown Jerpoint, Co Kilkenny. To the thirteenth-century nave and chancel was added a late medieval groin-vaulted rood-gallery incorporated into the ground floor of a residential tower. Features within the graveyard include a walled burial plot of the Hunt family that acquired the surrounding estate in the eighteenth century and which contains burials dating from 1771 to 1975; a finely-carved thirteenth-century table-font base; the horizontal slab for an altar tomb traditionally associated with St Nicholas bearing a low relief effigy of an ecclesiastic in full sacral vestments; and parts of a possibly thirteenth-century limestone market cross. | |||||||||
