Looks at the nineteenth-century revival in the carving of Irish High Crosses (for use as headstones) and their decline in popularity from the 1960s. Focusing on the Irish Roman Catholic community, the status of modern High Crosses as either art or craft is considered, together with their construction, form, and ornamentation. The County Kilkenny families who carved High Crosses and the problems in conserving these modern monuments are also mentioned. Concludes that while interest in this style of funerary monument is reawakening, there is a need to document the history of these crosses. | ||||||||
