Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Considers the toponymical and historical context of a sworn alibi dating from 1542, which provides details of a fire that had taken place at `St Malle's'. The document was previously printed in the Calendar of Ormond Deeds (6 vols, 1932-43), where the place-name had been misidentified as St Mullin's, County Carlow, rather than St Maul's, a parish on the outskirts of medieval Kilkenny. The identity of the persons named in the document (the sons and servants of James Purcell of Garranes) is discussed, as is what it says about Purcell's great house and the sleeping arrangements within it. | |||||||
