Abstract:
Historical account and architectural description of the rear portion of a mansion built by Martin Archer in 1582. The building is thought to have gained its name in the late-eighteenth or early-nineteenth century when it served as a tavern or `supper house', possibly because the entrance to the premises (at the rear of the building) was through a hole in a wall. Many original features, including tall gables, a steep roof pitch, hood-moulded and mullioned windows, octagonal chimneys, a ground-floor arrow loop, a garderobe, oak beams and flagstones, survive in this derelict building. The author has undertaken a conservation plan towards its restoration.
