Abstract:
The high incidence of young calves and mature females in faunal assemblages is often interpreted as being indicative of the practice of specialised dairying. However, faunal and documentary evidence from the early historical period in Ireland suggests that it was necessary for the calf to be present during the cow's lactation period: the deliberate slaughter of young calves cannot therefore be equated with a dairying economy. The earliest dairying in the British Isles should thus be dated to the Late Iron Age and in Ireland to the Early Christian period (see also 92/545).
