Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Biographical study and assessment of Sir Thomas Browne (1605-82) as a typical 17th century classically educated gentleman best known to archaeologists for his Hydrotaphia: Urne Buriall (1658) about the 40-50 pots from Old Walsingham. He reported them with sensible use of the knowledge and techniques available to him; and the drawings he provided allow us to identify a pagan Saxon cemetery of 5th/6th century. He was 'at once delighted and puzzled with the unexpected treasures of time'. | |||||
