Abstract:
Provides a re-investigation of the road which dispels doubts about its Roman origins. The report traces the route of the road further to the north-west to Shorn Hill where it joins the Roman road from Otterbourne to Stoney Cross. In so doing it passes close to the entrance of the large multivallate IA hillfort of Tatchbury. It is suggested that the road was probably constructed by Legio II Augusta in the early stages of the Roman invasion of Britain. At Applemore Hill the road connects to a newly discovered Roman road leading to Old Sarum. Includes appendices on
