Abstract:
A series of archaeological investigations identified evidence of medieval occupation in the north-eastern part of the town. A sequence of thirteenth--fourteenth-century buildings fronting onto Bridge Street and Salisbury Street are described, some with peg-tile hearths. Decorative louvers, glazed roof tiles and a zoomorphic finial were found in the demolition spread of a substantial building. A seventeenth- and eighteenth-century tannery with waterlogged barrel pits, a stone-lined trough and several large rectangular clay-lined pits, was located close to the River Avon. The animal bone evidence suggests that both cattle hides and sheep skins were being processed. Includes
