Abstract:
A study combining topographic, cartographic, and documentary evidence for an area north of Southampton. Evidence for organised land use in the Saxon period, based on diverse agricultural, pastoral, and woodland regimes is identified, and it is shown that the basis for settlement patterns had largely developed by the tenth century. An early origin for English commons is identified. Evidence for possible river engineering is discussed. Charter evidence also suggests a Late Saxon reorganisation of the landscape, which benefitted ecclesiastical bodies at Winchester. The study has nationwide implications.
