Abstract:
This is part two of a conference proceeding (for part one see 99/1198) and deals with dating applications. Papers on British/Irish material are as follows: `Dating Grimes Graves' by Janet Amber (591--600) which presents a redating program for the data sets relating to the Neolithic flint mines and strongly encourages major reassessment of other archaeological databases which used 14C dating techniques in the last forty years; `14C dating of a Neolithic field system at Ceide Fields, County Mayo, Ireland' by Seamas Caulfield, R G O'Donnell & P I Mitchell (629--40) which redates a Neolithic field system enclosed by stone walls to the first half of the fifth millennium BP and suggests that the generally accepted late date for land enclosure elsewhere should be reexamined in light of the presented evidence. Also discusses the stumps of pine (Pinus sylvestris) and thick blanket bog which cover the field system as indicators of climate change and draws comparisons with other studies in this area; `14C dating of laminated sediments from Loch Ness, Scotland' by M C Cooper, P E O'Sullivan, D D Harkness, E M Lawson, D Bull, A E S Kemp, Sylvia M Peglar, N M Matthews, R I Jones & A J Shine (781--93) which discusses laminations (varves) from a 6m sediment core thought to be formed by seasonal flooding. Time-depth relations for the core based on calibrated 14C dates and lamination counts, respectively, illustrate the close correspondence between the two sets of data. The latter are now being used to develop a varve chronology for the Holocene of Loch Ness which will further contribute to calibration studies of 14C dating of lake sediments, and for investigation of Holocene climatic variability of the eastern North Atlantic. Papers on more general technical issues include: ` Temporal changes of the 14C reservoir effect in lakes' by Mebus A Geyh, U Schotterer & M Grosjean (921--31); `14C studies of natural ice' by A T Wilson (953--62); `14C dating of modern marine and estuarine shellfish' by A G Hogg & T F G Higham (975--84); `Molecular, radioactive and stable carbon isotope characterisation of estuarine particulate organic matter' by Luc Megens, Johannes van der Plicht & Jan W de Leeuw (985--90); `The 14C age of humic substances in paleosols' by Alexander L Alexandrovskiy & Olga A Chichagova (991--7); `Using 14C as a tracer of carbon accumulation and turnover in soils' by G M Milton & S J Kramer (999--1011); and `Soil organic 14C dynamics: effects of pasture installation on arable land' by Paul F A M Romkens, J Hassink & Johannes van der Plicht (1023--31).
