Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The thirty-third consecutive season of excavation dealt with a small area of the courtyard. Trial trenching/augering revealed multi-phase activity in an area near the south-east boundary, and a ditched field system was evident in the south-western area. The north-eastern part of room 6 and the front corridor were investigated, but little survived of the mosaic pavement discovered in 1961. New evidence appeared in the form of a bedding trench, which was dated to the early-fourth century, earlier than expected. the depth of the foundation trenches indicates a multi-storey building with the principal domestic suites being in the upper storeys. The dating of an ox skull in room 6 to the Saxon period makes it likely that re-occupation was later than previously thought. | |||||||||
