Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
This highly complex problem is considered under three main heads: (1) general population estimates and their relation to cultural factors; (2) age-group span and life-expectancy; (3) sex variation. Revised estimates of early British populations, much higher than previous ones, are offered. Canonical analysis of cranial measurements shows considerable physical variation between cultural groups (Neo/Beaker/EIA/Saxon/medieval); the physical differences between Saxon and medieval populations are particularly intriguing, and age and sex variations also show some interesting anomalies. Many more skeletons must be recovered by careful and total excavation of large cemeteries like those at Cannington and Wharram Percy if meaningful statistics are to be obtained. | |||
