Abstract:
Presents the results of work undertaken as part of a programme aimed at combating structural problems. Excavations indicated that the foundations of the tower piers and crypt walls are solid and exhibit no signs of stress or instability. There are suggestions that there may have been an earlier structure beneath the south aisle of the crypt and an Anglo-Saxon burial was unearthed adjacent to the north east wall of the chapel. Work on the tower pier revealed that the present structure is the third tower to have been built, and that the `nova turris' which fell in 1175 was not situated at the west end, but was the central tower. The grave of a pilgrim, discovered adjacent to the south east tower pier, is detailed elsewhere. Specialist reports begin with `Textile, embroidery and fibre' by Penelope Walton (65-7) which provides a catalogue of finds and brief discussion. `Animal bones' by Sue Brown (67-8) is followed by `Environmental material' by Philippa Tomlinson (68-9). `Note on the medieval crypt wall paintings excavated at Worcester Cathedral' by Lucy-Anne Hunt (70-2) completes the separately authored sections.
