Abstract:
An appraisal of known evidence for this significant but poorly documented and unexcavated site. Further research may shed light not only on the stronghold's development but also on the Beauchamps -- one of the most powerful baronial families of the Middle Ages. The survival of Elmley after the 1268 acquisition of the title Earl of Warwick by William Beauchamp and the shift in power to Warwick, until its abandonment in the sixteenth century, is discussed. Excavation is needed to add to this knowledge.
