Abstract:
Report on an excavation carried out in 2000 at Stoke Lane, Wychbold, Worcestershire, in advance of development. The work followed an evaluation comprising geophysical survey and trail excavation, which identified an area of Iron Age and Romano-British activity. The excavation revealed part of a ditched farmstead enclosure of Mid to Late Iron Age date. Within the enclosure, which was probably sub-rectangular, were three intercutting ring gullies and part of a possible fourth ring gully. A deposit of rounded stones filling the enclosure ditch, at one place, may have functioned as a causeway across it. Also within the enclosure was a linear ditch and several pits and postholes. There was evidence for either continuity of occupation of the enclosure into the early Romano-British period or reoccupation at this time. A linear ditch and an associated rectilinear enclosure, probably part of a field system, to the south were also dated to the early Romano-British period. An undated shallow circular annular ring ditch was also revealed. Several undated shallow scoops, containing charcoal, may possibly have been truncated hearths or possibly cremations, but are likely to be of medieval or post-medieval date.
