Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Report on an excavation undertaken in 1999 following identification of a Romano-British settlement from a scatter of Roman pottery and building materials recovered during fieldwalking, and sample trenching which identified a concentration of settlement features. The excavation identified Iron Age enclosures, pits and a roundhouse. The Romano-British settlement was extensively excavated. The site was reorganised in the late-second century and was occupied into the late-third or early-fourth century. Parts of three stone buildings were excavated, indicating a Romanised rural settlement, with some of the artefacts indicating a wider range and higher quality of material culture. A geophysical survey, undertaken to establish the extent of the settlement evidence and identify associated features, showed that the stone buildings were among several such structures arranged within a series of regular walled enclosures, indicating that the site was akin to villas found in other parts of the country. Evidence from fieldwalking in the surrounding area suggested widespread cultivation in the Romano-British period, and earlier fieldwork pointed to the existence of at least two other contemporaneous settlements.
