Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Two recent finds, a dagger and a rapier, form notable additions to the rare BA metalwork of the W Midlands. The dagger, from Harvington, has a straight-edged blade with mouldings; the hilt, badly damaged, retains two (possibly three) rivet holes. Scratches along the mouldings are consistent with the sheath of the dagger not being properly lined. The form and angle of the hiltmark might indicate a halberd, were it not for the lightness and other dagger-like features of the weapon. There are no really close parallels; the best are early MBA examples in ER Yorks and Scotland, including Gavel Moss (which suggests an early 14th cent date), but the dagger also has features recalling Beaker flat daggers. The rapier, from Ribbesford, falls into Trump's Group 2, c 12th cent BC, and is well beyond the centre of distribution of this type. | ||||||||
