Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Considers the potential impact on professional archaeology of increasing emphasis in public discourse on human rights, individual property rights and cultural rights. One area still unclear is the right to property as an individual right. Whether this will become a human right and what it will encompass if it does is questioned. The answers to these questions are relative. In particular, the development of cultural rights, with an emphasis on the public interest, will be significant. Individual property rights are already seen as circumscribing the conduct of archaeology in many countries. Cultural rights will have a further impact on such aspects as the conduct of fieldwork, publication and the use made of archaeological results. These rights are now under development and archaeologists will need to be proactive if they are to be involved. | ||||
