Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The flange-twisted torc found a century ago is set in the context of other BA torcs with a complete list of twisted MBA ornaments (except earrings) and their compositional analyses. The mode of wearing torcs is discussed. The 'restoration' of the Saint Helier torc unfortunately gave it a shape it had probably never had and interfered with its joints. Tabulation of torc associations indicates a Penard phase date for most, with origins in Taunton phase metalwork. There is some evidence for regional weightclusters, and Ireland, Brittany, and to a lesser extent Wales have the most extensive use of gold by weight; the smallest and lightest gold torcs are from S England and E Anglia where bronze remained important. | |
