Abstract:
A survey of Stonor Park and its environs in the aftermath of storm damage in 1990 revealed previously unknown features. The present Stonor Park, laid out in the eighteenth century, seems to have been preceded by a larger medieval park to the west, enclosed probably in the sixteenth century. A rabbit warren may also have been of medieval origin. The sequence of gardens north and south of the house has been partially reconstructed, and examination of parchmarks south of the house during the summer of 1989 revealed traces of a terraced, probably sixteenth-century garden. The Stonor archives contain much information on garden management.
