Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Reports excavations at a site running behind numbers 1--7 Holywell Street. Three drainage ditches and a number of large pits were dug on the site during the late-twelfth to early-thirteenth centuries. The pits may represent gravel pits. Subsequently there were structures on the site from the late-twelfth to the late-fourteenth centuries, including a number of sunken-featured structures which may have been cellars. The area appears to have reverted to cultivation before the fifteenth century. Two walls across the site represent the boundaries of a post-medieval property on St Cross Road that ran across the backs of 1--7 Holywell Street; the evidence for early medieval occupation suggests that there were properties on St Cross Road until the fifteenth century. There are notes on the `Pottery' by Lucy Bown & Catherine Underwood-Keevill (235--9), `Small finds' by Leigh Allen (240--1), and `Animal bone' by Bob Wilson (241--3). | ||||||||||||
