Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The rectorial barn, a Scheduled Ancient Monument and formerly property of New College (Oxford), has recently been repaired and refurbished as a museum store and exhibition. During the course of the works, the building was subject to a series of investigations above and below ground, together with an examination of the original building accounts of 1401--07 at New College. This study considers the processes and materials of the original building operation, and the complementary information provided by the standing and buried physical remains and the building accounts. The demolished lesser barn is described, and the use and later history of the great barn is outlined. There are details of: `Conservation of the Great Barn' by Anthony Fleming (335--9); `Historical background' by John Steane (339--46); `The archaeological context' by R A Chambers (346--53); `The masonry of the Great Barn' by John Steane (356--63); `The source of building stone used in the barn' by Philip Powell (363--4); `The carpentry of the Great Barn' by Julian Munby (365--72); `The lesser barn' by Mark Taylor (372--4); and finally a discussion of the whole by the main authors. |
