Abstract:
Reports an excavation which revealed a long sequence of occupation. Most significant was the discovery of three tenth- to eleventh-century cellars, and possibly one or two others. By the time the largest of these was constructed it appears that formal divisions existed between the properties. The following centuries saw backlands used for the disposal of domestic rubbish and cess. In the thirteenth to fourteenth centuries stone boundary walls and adjoining cesspits were constructed, consolidating earlier property divisions (see also 2002/476). With several remodellings, the stone-built cesspits continued in use until at least the nineteenth century. Includes reports on:
