Abstract:
Article examining in detail the complicated architectural history of University College prior to the construction of its Front Quadrangle in the seventeenth century. Separate sections consider the prehistory of the medieval quadrangle, when University College moved from its original home to the site of its new one; give an overview of what is known about the construction of the quadrangle; set out what is known about the appearance of the quadrangle, and its possible use and occupation; and tell the story of the final demolition of the quadrangle to make way for its successor.
