Area excavation at the site of the Chemistry Research Laboratory site for Oxford University has revealed a complex of features dating from the Neolithic to the Civil War. The main focus of the site was a Roman settlement, part of which has been previously excavated at Mansfield Road. However the excavations revealed a section of the Civil War ditch, producing new information relating to Oxford's Civil War fortifications. This has enabled a better understanding of the defences of this area of Oxford.
