Abstract:
Report on a strip map and sample exercise carried out between 2004 and 2006 at Ireland's End, Northmoor, in advance of gravel quarrying. Archaeological activity was confined to an area north and east of a palaeochannel to the south and west of the site. A Neolithic flint flake was recovered from the upper layers of the palaeochannel and a Bronze Age chert arrowhead was recovered from a Roman ditch. Evidence for four Iron Age enclosures was revealed in the northern part of the site. Domestic dwellings may have been located within the enclosures; the northernmost enclosure had deposits of bone, pot and slag placed within the ditch termini. This enclosure had been enlarged by the Late Iron Age and was probably used solely for holding animals. A formalised Late Iron Age/early Roman field system was also observed with a possible droveway to the west. Tow isolated mid- to late Saxon pits were identified in the northwest of the site, and it is suggested that they had a ritualistic use. The remains of three jars were found in one of the pits. A third pit to the west contained a large amount of cattle head and hoof bones and was dated to the late Saxon/early medieval period. Similarly dated boundary ditches and pits were observed to the east of the site. No evidence for any medieval or post-medieval settlement was revealed. However the site continued to be used for agricultural purposes, with furrows evident within both periods. Includes separately authored contributions on
