Abstract:
[SP509062]. Contractors' boreholes suggested that the motte had been built on the edge of the gravel terrace, first as a modest earthwork, later raised (?twice). A late Saxon hut in the bailey supports the idea of a castle built over an occupied area; St Budoc's church was demolished and St George's parish church was incorporated into the castle site (as happened in a few other towns). The semicircular barbican ditch contained much leatherwork and had two large rectangular pits in its counterscarp. Finds of particular interest included Saxo-Norman as well as medieval pottery, textiles, and a halfpenny of Eadred. DFR/Ed
