Abstract:
A full alphabetical list of prehistoric rock carvings in SW Scotland (excluding Argyll), with analysis and commentary, supplements the article noted in abstract 68/057. Over 180 sites comprising more than 3000 carvings have been visited; nearly half of them lie within three Kirkcudbrightshire parishes. Analyses treat "movable" and "immovable" examples separately and show diameters of carvings, type of rock selected (nearly always greywacke or sandstone), possible associations with metalworking areas (88% of immovables lying within 5-6 miles of gold or copper deposits or workings), situation (over 80% in good pasture), proximity to other prehistoric remains, distance from sea and heights above sea-level. The principal types of petroglyph are illustrated, and the dating and purpose of the carvings are discussed.
