Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Evaluation excavations in 1994 revealed a ditch system and pottery kiln forming part of the settlement known at Bainesse Farm on Dere Street. It provides definitive evidence for a local pottery industry that had already been identified from assemblages at Catterick. The vessels' handmade nature and hand-burnishing are unusual, particularly for a third to fourth century AD site in this area. This factor, in conjunction with a flanged rim from 1959 excavations, may indicate connections with the Dorset industry or possibly a migrant potter. | |||||||||
