Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Reports an item discovered by metal detection in the late 1970s and assumed to be part of a coffin. On further examination it appears instead to be part of a circular tank, probably fourth century AD in date, and possessed of Christian decoration. An `x' motif thought to represent the crux decassata, `y' motif representing moral choice, and an `x' and vertical motif thought to represent the earliest Christian monogram -- the iota-chi -- are in evidence. Its apparently deliberate dismemberment may be significant in terms of the fourth-century pagan revival. | ||||||
