Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Largely historical. Assesses the evidence for the `Attacotti', a mysterious and apparently cannibalistic people who are recorded attacking the fourth-century British diocese. Uniquely among the peoples of the British Isles, beyond Roman rule, the Attacotti later appear as units in the Roman army. An examination of their identity and origins demonstrates that both Roman and modern authors have mistaken an Irish collective noun denoting political status for a specific tribal name. Consequently modern scholarship has considerably misunderstood the nature and location of the threat posed by this `tribe'. | ||||||||||||
