Internal evidence alone demonstrates that the Itinerary is compiled from a number of sources ranging from early Antonine to Diocletian. Many errors arose in transmission, but underlying them, the calculation of distances is so heavily weighted on the minus-side that the measurement of distances from town boundaries rather than centres is probable. Fundamental inconsistencies have probably arisen from the conflation of more than one Iter, as is the case with I, XII and XV. Many obvious errors of distance are removed by the simple correction of numerals likely to have been confused at the time of copying. In sum, three stages of corruption can be identified: the introduction of individual errors, the recalculation of totals, and further corruptions producing totals wrong by the evidence of the text. Each iter's text is quoted in full, illustrated by a map and accompanied by a commentary. There are appendices on the Itinerary manuscripts and on the RB place-names appearing therein. PM | |
