NN 837106; NO 614656; NH 661385. Excavations at these three sites clarified the relationships between the four series of temporary camps known north of the Antonine Wall - the Stracathro, 30-acre, 63-acre, and 120-acre series. At Ardoch the sequence was 13-acre camp, soon enlarged to 30; probably a long interval, then 63-acre soon followed by a 120-acre camp. At Stracathro, the porta decumana of a Stracathro-type camp was excavated. At Ythan Wells, a similar camp was followed after a long interval by a 120-acre camp. In general, the 63-acre and 120-acre series cover much the same ground. Only five or six Stracathro camps are known, together with ?eight in the 30-acre series; the distribution patterns reinforce each other and a Flavian date seems likely for both series. E W | |
