Abstract:
The objects previously known as "dress fasteners" have been re-examined, taking a much wider geographical area than the 1958 study, and are reclassified with a discussion of their function. On shape and construction the 165 examples catalogued can be classified into ten groups, from the kind developed from an EIA prototype to the bar fasteners of late-Roman date and a rare variant in bone. Their purpose must be to hold together two pieces of woven fabric or leather, but they do not appear in representations of provincial clothing and none shows any sign of wear. They could have been harness fittings, especially for saddle-cloths where they would not be subjected to strain, for which many were unsuited. Although they occur in quantity on the Continent, their popularity was greatest in the garrisons of the army in Britain. They disappeared from use at the end of 2nd century, perhaps through obsolescence.
