Five large smelting-furnaces at Laxton and one at Byfield are the first British examples of a type known in Austria. The Laxton furnaces, which had linings of fired clay, represent iron-working on a massive scale, perhaps from the 1st century AD; they were superseded by the more usual shaft furnaces . Stone foundations of houses or workshops and an inhumation cemetery (eighty-seven graves) lay close by. The Byfield furnace is undated but Roman by analogy. F B | ||||||||||
