Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Recently discovered evidence indicates that the lack of patterned pavements in SE England postulated by Stevens does not apply to the Chiltern villas, since eight of the sixteen excavated examples have produced evidence for mosaics, mostly of 2nd-4th centuries. Moreover some of the remaining eight have been little explored. The 2nd century examples indicate early Romanisation among the Catuvellauni; but during 4th century there was little villa expansion compared with other areas, perhaps because the original settlement pattern curtailed scope.
