Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Archaeological evidence, texts, inscriptions and graffiti show that the peacetime military diet was as varied as that of the civilian. It consisted of corn, bacon, cheese, vegetables and sour wine, plus salt and olive oil; meat was also commonly eaten, even in Caesar's time. The troops made their own cheese, hunted for game in their free time and sent home for delicacies. Fish and shellfish, poultry, fruit, nuts and pulses were all commonly eaten, and inscribed amphorae attest the use of sweet wine, plums, olives, fish sauce and honey. | |||||
