Abstract:
Proposes a new method of assessing the archaeological evidence, of establishing what was the highest sealevel at particular sites and periods around Roman Britain, and of determining the extent of any changes since then. Archaeological evidence is taken from the Fenland, Roman London, the Medway estuary, Dover, the Scilly Isles, Caerleon, Chester, the Wirral, and the Mersey estuary. There is a consistency in the figures for the extent of the rise in highest astronomical tide (HAT) which could be useful both to archaeologists and to researchers into sealevel change.
