Abstract:
Publishes the Seal House, Swan Lane, and Billingsgate Lorry Park sites, draws together and revises material from other excavations, and presents a model for the late 2nd to 4th century harbour, its relationship to the riverside wall, and the significance of contemporary fluctuations in tide levels. The 19th century observations at Cannon Street Station are also included, as is information on the 1st and 2nd century waterfronts. Many tree-ring dates are now available and stratigraphic sequences are laid out. Reasons for the continued expansion and replacement of the waterfront are examined (eg population pressure, silting, etc). The 3rd century market decline depressed the waterfront and may even have led to its supersession.
