Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Presents some initial results of the recovery of 104 cremations and 575 inhumations of 1st-5th centuries from a 16.5ha cemetery east of the Roman city - the largest cemetery sample from London. Bone and wood preservation varied considerably and many burials had been partly destroyed. Comment is provided on spatial organization (alignments, groupings etc); range of burial rite and gravegoods; memorial structures; animal burials; and evidence for religious belief. Two late burials were of special interest: one had a chip-carved belt set and gilded crossbow brooch; another had a pair of tutulus brooches of ?earlier 5th century, a genuine German. There was evidence of 'undertakers' in the sorting and packing of cremations, making of coffins, supply of pyre materials, etc. | |||||||||||||
