Abstract:
Tacitus' reference to the Colchester temple is examined in the light of normal provincial practice and relevant texts, and a deliberately heretical explanation offered. Tacitus, in saying constitutum (not dedicatum) was making a technical reference to a temple begun c 55 which, on this scale, would have been still incomplete by the rebellion of 60. Indeed, perhaps the expense of building, as much as the priestly burdens, precipitated the rebellion.
