Abstract:
On the argument that the Notitia represents the situation in the 420s an interpretation is proposed of the British section as representing two phases in a reoccupation of Britain begun in 415-6 and abandoned in c 418-9. The section on the Wall does not prove part of the Notitia to be out of date. The Count of the Britains commands a relieving force; the forts under the Count of the Saxon Shore and the Duke of the Britains divide into those still held in 415-6 and those later recovered. The west from Ribchester to Portchester was defended by former enemies employed as foederati. B D
