Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Reports on the results of testing of anthropogenic deep topsoils dating from the twelfth- to nineteenth-century and located in West Mainland, Orkney. Spatial variations in manuring intensity are demonstrated, and the types of organic material used are identified (including composted turf and ruminant animal manure). Comparison of these results with documentary records suggests that the latter are only partially reliable. This study establishes that biomarkers of past agricultural practices survive in medieval and later relict landscapes. Au(adp) | |||
