SE 209462. (1) A large collection of Meso artefacts was recovered from an area 1000yds x 250 in which four distinct concentrations of material were identified. Locational and typological considerations suggest affinities with the Maglemosian, while the use of raw materials from three different sources is seen as evidence for repeated occupations of the site over a long period. Appended is an inventory of Meso assemblages from Mid-Wharfedale, divided into three time-successive groups on the basis of the raw materials used. (2) An independent assessment of the Sandbeds lithic assemblage. The character of the microliths and the raw materials used indicate an early Meso date. However, a detailed comparison between this assemblage and those from other N English early Meso sites reveals significant differences, probably attributable to varying activities. By virtue of its environmental situation and assemblage composition, the Sandbeds site has more in common with Star Carr than with Pennine "Broad Blade" sites. Following recent suggestions about the nature of the settlement at Star Carr, the Sandbeds site may represent a series of temporary winter settlements of groups occupying the neighbouring Pennine uplands in summer and exploiting migratory herd animals.
