Abstract:
[SK 517989]. Gatehouse foundations (c 1200) sealed fragments of local St Neots and developed Stamford pottery. Part of one tower had slid down the dumped clay bank in one piece;it had been refaced c 1325. Details recovered included the position of the gates and portcullis (lead-lined holes for portcullis chains) and a cylindrical chimney with a frustrum cap. The contemporary barbican had a stair against the wall rising to an angle turret, with an inserted latrine block in the curtain wall. Exploration of the internal domestic buildings nearby revealed a basement prison and inserted sanitary arrangements. D F R
