Reports a settlement sequence from RB to the present, with emphasis on the monastery founded by Cuthbert in 685 and what followed it. The monastic cemetery was on the hilltop, the church slightly downslope. After abandonment of the monastery (later than 883) the village and its fields were laid out, though the church and hall were not built till late pre-Conquest times. Later developments included infilling of the green. Discussion of historical context. | ||||
