Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
As part of an issue celebrating the centenary of the National Trust, recent land acquisitions relating to the coastal alum industry are detailed. There has previously been a bias towards the study of documentary sources as evidence for the alum industry. Its archaeology is threatened by coastal erosion, and there is an urgent need to record this evidence and redress the imbalance. The Yorkshire region of the NT owns the partial remains of three important alum sites, and the results of the detailed archaeological evaluation of these sites are presented. The archaeological implications of the Trust's continuing acquisition of threatened coastline are also considered. | ||
