Abstract:		 The Lloyds, an area between Ironbridge and Coalport, was once an important mining community of pits and houses, most of which have been destroyed by a landslip. An industrial survey of almost the whole of the Gorge was undertaken, but the Lloyds remained as a blank area; this paper attempts to complete the picture. It draws mainly on documentary sources for the 18th and 19th centuries, but also looks at evidence from survey work and excavation, telling the story of the mining company which controlled the operations, the early engines and engineers, and working methods.
