Investigates the nature of cuir bouilli (shaped leather which has been made irreversibly hard and less permeable by wet heat) using historical literature, practicing craftsmen, and by examining collections. Demonstrates that increased knowledge about the material and the use of optical and UV microscopy of cross-sections underpin decisions about the treatment of different leather surfaces, including the removal of leather dressing by careful solvent swabbing. | |
