Abstract:
Report on conservation treatment carried out on 105 Bronze Age ceramic vessels from the Wiltshire Heritage Museum and Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum. The vessels are parts of an important type series, and had been restored in the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries with unsuitable materials. Research was undertaken to try and establish who the previous restorers had been, and cement removal methods were assessed in a pilot project. Electrically powered hand tools were proven to give the most controllable results. With the exception of cement removal, conservation processes were based on well-known approaches. As a result of the final project, a number of new discoveries were made about the vessels, resulting in re-evaluation of the shape and decoration.
